Adele Baxter

User Experience Designer + Architecture Student

My name is Adele, I am a Brisbane based UX designer and Architecture student. I have been working as a UX designer since 2019 and began studying Architecture at the start of 2022. I'm excited to see where the two disciplines can be combined to create meaningful, human centred and sustainable designs.

This project aimed to understand and evaluate how existing support and services impacted the locals ability to respond and recover during the monsoon disaster of 2019 in North Queensland.

Suncorp engaged a Symplicit team to build a smarter, simple, trusted digital claims experience that is industry leading and lifts digital claim lodgement and tracking. The team completed a variety of activities to create and test two end-to-end prototypes.

I had an assumption that gymnastics clubs did not consider sustainability when thinking about their equipment and matting. Hex Core was born from the research I undertook while challenging that assumption. Hex Core is the first environmentally conscious landing mat designed for gymnastic use.

This page has a small collection of artwork I have created as for other people or for myself. I create art as a way for me to experiment with new tools and styles. Some of the pieces on this page are my first attempts at a style or tool, and other pieces have been requested.

This page has a small collection of the projects I have worked on while studying Architecture at the University of Queensland. I know there is lots of room for improvement and I'm excited to continue to learn and progress my work in the remainder of the degree.

About me

About me

Thanks for making it this far! Here I'll share a little about my past and what has shaped me into the person I am today. I have always had an interest in digital design; with my dad being a photographer I grew up playing with Photoshop and the adobe suite. I would often sit with him while he worked, watching as he edited photos and became captivated by the process. Later when I was about 10 years old I remember finding a Dixon Homes catalogue in the mail. It was the first time I had ever seen house plans. I instantly became fascinated and would collect the magazine's to copy the plans into a sketch book. I used to sit and imagine the types of people who would live in those houses and how they would use those spaces. I think that was when I first wanted to become an architect.

After graduating high school I applied for an Architecture course but unfortunately did not get accepted. So I began a Bachelor of Design, majoring in Industrial Design with a minor in Fashion Communication at the Queensland University of Technology (QUT).

While studying I was fortunate enough to work in two very different design roles as an intern. The first was in Brisbane, working in-house as an industrial designer with a company that produced luxury animal enclosures for discerning clients that wanted high quality products. The second internship was in New York City, where I lived while working with RUNE NYC, a fashion firm that specialises in athleisure wear.

While working with both companies I was immersed in the manufacturing process and behind the scenes knowledge which I could never have experienced in the classroom. My time as an intern gave me confidence, experience and knowledge that I continue to draw from in my career today.

After graduating from QUT I started my current position as a UX design consultant with Symplicit. Symplicit is a User Experience design consultancy specialising in behavioural research and human centred design. In my role I use comprehensive and diverse research and design methods to improve the human experience of services, physical and digital products and spaces. I enjoy being able to work with a large variety of clients who each have their own unique design needs. For each project, the Symplicit team and I are able to change the way systems, products and services work so the world can be a more efficient, sustainable and human friendly place.

Although I enjoy working as a UX designer, in 2021 I decided to follow my childhood dream and began studying Architecture at the University of Queensland (UQ) in 2022. So far balancing work and study has been challenging, but the benefits of being in both spaces makes that challenge worthwhile. I am really excited to see how my knowledge and network in the UX space can influence my approach and career in architecture.
